BAE Systems Barrow-in-Furness Shipyard Expansion

BAE Systems is expanding and upgrading its submarine-building facilities at Barrow-in-Furness. New facilities support construction and testing for current and future submarine programmes.[1][2]

Current position

The Office for Nuclear Regulation describes new facilities being built at the Devonshire Dock Complex. In October 2025, the Project Spartan fire-protection supplier reported that it was delivering design, installation and certification work for the new building.

Shipyard facilities

  • The Project Spartan complex at Devonshire Dock Quay is designed to house engineering areas, research laboratories, training facilities and collaboration space.
  • BAE reported in May 2022 that more than £1 billion had already been invested in technology and infrastructure for Dreadnought, with a further £450 million planned over the programme’s life.
