Barbican Centre renewal

The Barbican Centre renewal repairs and upgrades the Grade II-listed arts complex in London, restoring its Conservatory, foyers and lakeside terrace.[1]

Current position

Planning and listed-building consent have been granted for Phase 1. Major works are planned from 2027, with most arts activities pausing from June 2028 to June 2029; the Beech Street cinemas will remain open.

Restoration and access

  • New lifts will improve access to the Conservatory’s balconies and the Concert Hall and Theatre foyers. Conservatory works include climate control and repairs to ageing materials.
  • Phase 1 is costed at £231 million, with £191 million committed by the City of London Corporation and further fundraising planned.
