Bridgwater tidal-barrier scheme
A tidal barrier across the River Parrett and downstream flood defences are being built to reduce flood risk in and around Bridgwater. The scheme is designed to protect around 12,800 homes and businesses.[1][2]
Current position
In its 14 October 2026 design-review update, Somerset Council reported a transition from temporary works to permanent reinforced-concrete foundations. Barrier superstructure work is expected to start in early 2027.
Project details
- The revised barrier design has three approximately 15-metre towers supporting two vertical lift gates. Drive equipment will be housed at the base of the towers for maintenance access.
- Downstream earthworks cover Chilton Trinity, Pawlett and Combwich. Excavated borrow pits provide construction fill and will become new habitats.
