Cardiff Crossrail Phase 1A — Callaghan Square
Cardiff Council and Transport for Wales are building a tram-train link between Cardiff Central and Cardiff Bay. The first phase adds a new tramway through Callaghan Square, joining the existing Bay line, alongside new platforms at Cardiff Central and Cardiff Bay. GRAHAM is carrying out construction, with utility diversions under way before the tram infrastructure is installed.[1][2]
Current position
Work at Callaghan Square moved into a further construction stage in September 2026, including relocating gas, water and telecommunications infrastructure to make room for the tramway.
Benefits
- The connection would make it easier to travel between the main railway station, Butetown and Cardiff Bay. The Callaghan Square works also include new public spaces, segregated cycle routes and improved pedestrian crossings.
