Dinorwig Pumped Storage Replanting

Dinorwig is a 1.8 GW pumped-storage power station in Gwynedd, North Wales. Its replanting programme is modernising ageing generating units to extend the station’s operating life and retain its rapid-response storage capacity.[1][2]

Current position

ENGIE has begun a ten-year replanting programme across Dinorwig and Ffestiniog. GE Vernova was selected for the first two Dinorwig units, a roughly £300 million phase expected to enter service in 2028 and 2029.

Benefits

  • The first phase covers two generating units under a roughly £300 million contract; the upgraded units are expected to enter commercial operation in 2028 and 2029.
  • The wider up-to-£1 billion, 10-year refurbishment commitment covers both Dinorwig and Ffestiniog; it is not a Dinorwig-only project budget.
