Fingle Woods Ancient Woodland Restoration

The Woodland Trust and National Trust are restoring ancient woodland at Fingle Woods in the Teign Valley. Conifers planted for timber are being removed gradually to give native trees and woodland plants space to regenerate. Streamside work includes thinning dense conifers and building leaky dams to retain water within the woods.[1][2]

Current position

An August 2026 operator report describes continuing streamside restoration and monitoring across seven small watercourses. Nearly four kilometres had been surveyed to establish a baseline for future comparisons.

Project details

  • The Woodland Trust’s reserve listing records 265.24 hectares. A cumulative area of completed restoration has not been reported.
  • The joint restoration project began in 2013.
