IonQ and the University of Cambridge’s quantum research centre is based at the Cavendish Laboratory’s Ray Dolby Centre in West Cambridge.[1]

Current position

The partners announced the centre’s opening on 15 October 2026. Deployment of the Superion computer and on-campus quantum network remains a future part of the partnership.

Research and equipment

  • Nine initial projects cover quantum hardware and applications in fields including chemistry, engineering and medicine, involving researchers across several Cambridge departments.
  • IonQ plans to deploy a Superion 256-qubit computer and a quantum network with two data centres and three networking nodes. The partnership also supports academic posts, postdoctoral researchers and PhD students.
