Lower Thames Crossing

The Lower Thames Crossing is a planned road and tunnel connection between Kent and Essex, east of the Dartford Crossing.[1]

Current position

National Highways reported more than 30 zero-emission machines working across Kent and Essex, with around 150 expected at peak construction in 2028.

Why it matters

The scheme would create a second major road crossing of the Thames east of London, linking Kent and Essex and providing an alternative to the Dartford Crossing. It includes approaches, junctions, a bored tunnel and landscape and habitat measures. The case for the scheme is about network capacity and reliability as well as the river crossing itself.

Benefits

  • National Highways says the crossing would nearly double road capacity across the Thames east of London and reduce pressure on Dartford.
