Matrix Kilmarnock Energy Centre

Matrix Renewables is developing a 500-megawatt battery storage facility beside the Kilmarnock electricity substation in East Ayrshire. The project received consent in April 2025 and is progressing through surveys and preparation for construction. It would store electricity and return it to the network when needed.[1][2][3]

Current position

Matrix reports pre-construction surveys and an indicative construction start in the fourth quarter of 2026, with completion targeted for the third quarter of 2028.

Benefits

  • The planned 1,000-megawatt-hour storage capacity would provide around two hours of supply at full output, helping make renewable electricity available beyond the time it is generated.
