Current position

The Department for Transport has approved the platform-height exemption needed for level boarding at Elizabeth line platforms 5–8 at Old Oak Common. HS2 will lower the tracks using slab track so passengers can board without a step. This is a design approval for the station under construction; the interchange has not opened.

Why it matters

The interchange is designed around six underground HS2 platforms and eight conventional platforms. It would connect high-speed services with the Elizabeth line and Great Western Main Line, creating a transfer point between these networks in west London. The underground station box also forms part of the route towards Euston.

Benefits

  • 14 platforms: six high-speed and eight conventional, with a planned capacity of up to 250,000 passengers a day.
