Smeaton battery storage

Kona Energy is developing a 228-megawatt battery storage facility near Smeaton in East Lothian. The project has planning consent and a Capacity Market agreement, which provides revenue for making capacity available to support electricity supplies. Detailed design and work with potential delivery partners are under way.[1][2]

Current position

The project has planning consent. Kona is progressing detailed design and discussions with potential delivery partners.

Benefits

  • Its planned 456-megawatt-hour capacity would provide around two hours of supply at full output. Kona intends the batteries to store surplus renewable electricity and help relieve pressure on the network between Scotland and England.
