Zenobē Coalburn battery storage

Zenobē is building a 200-megawatt battery storage facility south of Lesmahagow in South Lanarkshire. The project would connect to Coalburn North substation and store electricity for up to four hours of supply at full output. Its location on the network carrying Scottish renewable power towards England is intended to help reduce wasted wind generation.[1][2][3]

Current position

Construction is under way. Developer publications give different expected opening years, 2027 and 2028, so the opening schedule remains uncertain.

Benefits

  • The batteries would keep surplus wind electricity for later use when generation falls or demand rises. This would help relieve pressure on the electricity network and make more renewable power available to consumers.
