Northern Ireland approves plans for 120 MW Ballyross battery storage project

Plans for the Ballyross battery storage project in County Antrim have been approved by Mid and East Antrim Borough Council.

The proposed facility near Gleno and Larne would provide up to 120 megawatts of power and 480 megawatt-hours of storage — enough to deliver its full rated output for four hours. Developed by RES near the existing Ballyvallagh electricity substation, Ballyross is intended to help Northern Ireland store electricity and release it when demand increases.

The project includes plans for landscape screening and native planting. Planning permission was granted on 23 October, subject to conditions.

Construction is expected to take around 20 months once it starts; no construction or operating date has been confirmed.
