Transpennine Route Upgrade

A programme of railway improvements across the approximately 70-mile Manchester–Huddersfield–Leeds–York corridor, including electrification, additional tracks, signalling, station improvements and work on bridges and level crossings.[1]

Current position

Network Rail confirms completion of the 19 September–4 October Huddersfield works, including two new lines with more than two kilometres of track, track renewals and structures for future electrification. These are delivered works within the wider Transpennine Route Upgrade, not completion or energisation of the whole route. A further station closure is expected from Christmas Eve, with reopening planned for 1 February 2027.

Benefits

  • The route connects Manchester Victoria with York through Huddersfield and Leeds. Improvements vary by section, with faster journeys, increased capacity and electrification among the programme objectives.
