Seven ancient woodlands benefit from completed restoration programme

Herts & Middlesex Wildlife Trust has completed a three-year conservation programme across seven ancient woodland reserves, supported by £162,698 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

More than 0.7 hectares of woodland have been returned to coppice management, while overgrown glades at Astonbury Wood have been reopened. The trust reports increased sightings of Silver-washed Fritillary butterflies and first recorded sightings of Beautiful Demoiselle and Willow Emerald damselflies at Astonbury during 2026.
