South Downs restoration project records 5,290 butterflies in 2026 survey

Read story

Ecologists monitoring Halnaker Hill Farm near Chichester have recorded 5,290 butterflies from 28 species during the 2026 survey season, following ongoing nature restoration across 330 acres (approximately 134 hectares) of former intensive farmland. The totals include 85 Small Blue and seven Dingy Skipper butterflies, both species documented at the site for the first time during 2026, alongside 547 Small Heath butterflies. The privately managed project, under a long-term conservation agreement with the South Downs National Park Authority, is establishing grassland, hedgerows, woodland and pond habitats. These are newly published full-season survey findings; the two butterfly species had already been reported at the farm in July.

Lancashire plants almost 99 hectares of new woodland in latest season

Read story

The Lancashire Woodland Partnership has planted 109,833 trees to create 98.76 hectares of new woodland during its latest planting season. Across all types of planting, the county-wide programme delivered 271,418 trees, including 17 new micro-forests and 61 orchards, alongside more than 27 kilometres of new hedgerows. The partnership, which brings together councils, environmental charities, landowners and volunteers, has planted 495,362 trees across its two most recent seasons. These are tree-planting outputs, rather than confirmed numbers of surviving mature trees.

Seven ancient woodlands benefit from completed restoration programme

Read story

Herts & Middlesex Wildlife Trust has completed a three-year conservation programme across seven ancient woodland reserves, supported by £162,698 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. More than 0.7 hectares of woodland have been returned to coppice management, while overgrown glades at Astonbury Wood have been reopened. First annual Tideway assessment reports 86% reduction in overflow volumes

Read story

The first annual Tideway Benefits Report estimates an 86% reduction in storm-overflow volumes entering the tidal Thames in 2025 against the pre-Tideway average, and approximately 84 tonnes of sewage-derived litter intercepted. The volume comparison is modelled; 2025 was unusually dry, although the report attributes improvement beyond rainfall effects to the tunnel.

Humber oyster monitoring finds young spat forming mini reefs

Read story

A field team from North Wales Wildlife Trust and Yorkshire Wildlife Trust reported finding many native oysters during monitoring at Spurn Point, with young oyster spat forming small reefs on scallop shells. Samples were taken for analysis of abundance, size and mortality. The partners have not published a count or survival estimate, so this observation does not quantify recovery against Wilder Humber’s 500,000-oyster target. The monitoring visit date was not stated.

Read story

Work is under way to turn 136 hectares of former farmland in Cambridgeshire into wetland, with channels, pools and reedbeds forming the Speechly’s Farm phase of the Great Fen. The 5 October report confirms restoration has begun, rather than that the habitat is complete. The separately completed 25-hectare New Decoy phase is an earlier milestone.

Species Survival Fund reports habitat work across 4,800 hectares

Read story

An independent evaluation of England’s £25 million Species Survival Fund records habitat work across 4,800 hectares through 20 projects between 2024 and early 2026. The total comprises 654 hectares of new habitat, 686 hectares restored and 3,460 hectares brought under active management. Projects also planted more than 127,500 trees and completed 3,596 habitat and species surveys. The National Lottery Heritage Fund published the findings on 5 October, following the end of funded delivery in February. These figures measure habitat work undertaken; longer-term ecological recovery remains subject to monitoring.

Natural England publishes national peatland-restoration register

Read story

A new map layer brings together restoration-project records from three schemes and makes publishable data available for download. It adds restoration tracking to the England Peat Map. Natural England cautions that gaps and differences in the underlying records limit the statistics; mapped projects are not proof of completed ecological recovery.
